Muscat: A month-long Made in Oman campaign will kick-start from tomorrow in some of the major supermarkets, hypermarkets and malls across Oman. The campaign was launched in the North Batnah region of Oman today by Abdullah bin Ali Al Shafei, Chairman of the Chamber’s Branch in North Batinah.

The initiative is organised by the Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Investment Promotion in partnership with the Authority of Small and Medium Enterprises Development, the Consumer Protection Authority, Madayn and Oman Chamber of Commerce and Industry, and well supported by business and merchants’ community. The campaign is intended to spread awareness about the local products and also to support local producers and manufacturers by encouraging consumers across the Sultanate to think and buy local first.

Minister of Commerce, Industry & Investment Promotion Qais bin Mohammed Al Yousef, noted the tremendous support received from various organisations for the Made in Oman campaign, and said that one of the key goals of the campaign is to get consumers to see Omani products and services in a new light. The campaign aims to encourage people to contribute to the economy, and be part of a tangible long-term growth by buying local products.

Local produce

There are many stellar examples of local options available in Oman that are cost-effective with internationally accepted quality norms. Oman has made a mark in vegetable farming, with this year alone seeing a bumper crop harvest, in most of the crops grown locally.

COVID-19 also saw a new opportunity of PPE production that were set up locally by enterprising youth, which got further boosted with the buy-local momentum. Another area that has given a run for global players are bistros and restaurants, with some international players having moved out as local brands offered better option, in services, cost and products.

Young Omanis are also encouraged to set up their own start-up ventures through training sessions, and workshops that highlight risk management and business sustainability especially in light of the current crises experienced by small and medium enterprises around the world. They are also informed about the expansion in the areas of sustainability startups and entrepreneurship development as steps towards motivating Omani youth to start their own businesses.
