Kuwait City: Kuwait formed a new cabinet of ministers on Monday, after the Emir, Sheikh Nawaf Al Ahmed Al Sabah, signed an Amiri decree.

The newly appointed cabinet, led by Prime Minister Sabah Al Khaled Al Sabah, was sworn in after Kuwait held parliamentary elections on December 5, as it is customary for the government to hand in its registration after elections are held.

This is the first cabinet of ministers to be sworn in under Sheikh Nawaf since he became Emir of Kuwait in September. Although it is customary for the government to hand in its resignation when a new Emir is sworn in, Sheikh Nawaf reaffirmed his confidence in the current government and asked them to carry out their duties until the elections were over.

The new cabinet saw a grand reshuffling, as only six of the 16 ministers served in the previous cabinet.

Of the six held the, all held the same position except Rana Al Fares, Minister of Public Works, who will be heading the Municipality and Anas Al Saleh, will no longer be serving as the Minister of Interior and will be resuming his position as Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of State for Cabinet Affairs.

Hamad Al Jaber Al Ali Al Sabah, former ambassador to Saudi Arabia and Minister of Information, has been appointed as the Minister of Defence.

Of the 16, Essa Al Kandari, is an elected MP but will be serving as both an MP and the Minister of Social and Islamic affairs.

A new cabinet of ministers was sworn in on Monday as they took the constitutional oath before the Emir, Sheikh Nawaf Al Ahmed Al Sabah.

Making up one-third of the parliament, the ministers will also be voting on the speaker of parliament, the deputy speaker and the members of each committee.

This is the first government to be formed since December 2019.
