Cairo: Bahrain has unveiled a plan to give a booster shot against COVID-19 after administering two doses of the vaccination.

The country’s medical taskforce team said the third dose, marks a new phase in vaccination and aims at protecting health of the citizens and foreign residents.

The priority categories for the booster shots are the elderly aged 60 and above, people suffering from obesity or immunodeficiency diseases and frontline medical workers. The team said that the dose will be given to these categories six months after receiving the second.

The other groups of citizens and foreign residents will have access to the booster shot 12 months after receiving the second.

Third dose

According to the medical team, the type of the vaccine in the third dose may be changed from that of the two previous doses based on recommendations to be issued in this regard later.

All recovered people in Bahrain have been urged to register to receive inoculation against COVID-19 three months after recovery to enhance the body immunity against the virus.

Bahrain initiated mass vaccinations against COVID-19 in December. Around 44 per cent of the people eligible for inoculation in Bahrain have so far got the jab, according to the team.
