A grocery store in Aluva, Ernakulam, was burgled early Sunday, with the thief stealing mainly cooking oil and some food items while leaving ₹5,000 untouched in both the cash and charity boxes.

According to Manorama News, the accused first tried drilling through the concrete floor but failed. They then broke the main lock to enter the shop near Thottumugham bridge in Aluva.

Focus on coconut oil amid soaring prices

The thief targeted 30 bottles of virgin coconut oil, each worth around ₹600, along with some gingelly oil, apples, and milk. The total loss from the coconut oil alone is estimated at ₹18,600. Coconut oil prices have nearly doubled in Kerala ahead of Onam, straining household budgets.

Evidence tampering and CCTV footage

The accused cut CCTV cables inside the shop before leaving. The shop owner, Ayoob Puthanpurayil, reviewed footage showing the thief spending a long time inside. Several curd packets were found opened, and empty water bottles were scattered around.

Police response and local impact

Despite evidence, police said no formal complaint was filed and have not begun an investigation. This is the fourth attempted burglary in the area recently. Rising coconut oil prices have made such thefts more common, prompting government subsidies for Onam.
