Patna: Police in Bihar have arrested a man for handing his wife to a group of gamblers after he lost her in a bet at his village.

The bizarre incident took place last month but came to light when the victim registered a case with the police on Sunday night. The incident took place in Bhagalpur district, more than 230 km east of Patna.

Police said the accused Saroj Kumar who was a habitual gambler was playing gamble with his friends during Diwali when he lost everything to his friends.

Eventually, he placed his wife on the bet and he lost her too.

Soon after losing his wife, he handed over his wife to the gamblers who allegedly sexually exploited her. She told the police she didn’t identify the accused persons since she was blind-folded by the accused persons. However, the woman stayed with her husband.

Rushed to police

The accused threatened his wife with dire consequences if she revealed it to anyone. On Sunday, he assaulted his woman when she refused to stay with his gamblers after which she rushed to the local police station and registered a case against all the accused persons.

“This is a very shocking incident. We have arrested the woman’s husband and raids are on to nab other absconding accused persons. They will be caught very soon,” Bhagalpur district superintendent of police Ashish Bharti told the media on Monday.

Another police official Rajesh Kumar Jha in charge of investigation said they had conducted a medical examination of the woman and were awaiting the report. He said the man lost his wife in gamble and repeatedly forced her to go to the gamblers.

“Based on the statement of the victim woman, we have registered a case and further investigation is on,” said Jha. He said the investigation would be completed soon and the case would be speedily tried.

Reports said the man had been torturing his wife since she didn’t become a mother even 10 years after their marriage.
