Complaints against Nabi during residency cited rudeness, negligence, and frequent absences
Dr Umar Un Nabi, identified as the prime suspect in the deadly Delhi blast, was previously employed at a Jammu and Kashmir hospital, where he was terminated following a patient’s death, media reports said.
The Gujarat Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) on Sunday arrested Ahmed Mohiuddin Syed, Mohd Suhel, and Azad for allegedly planning terrorist attacks across India. Authorities recovered two Glock pistols, one Beretta pistol, 30 live cartridges, and four litres of castor oil from the suspects.
“All three were arrested while supplying weapons and planning attacks in various parts of the country,” the ATS said.
Earlier this year, the ATS also apprehended five operatives linked to Al-Qaeda in the Indian Subcontinent (AQIS), including a Bengaluru woman allegedly running an online terror module connected to Pakistan.
Photos of Dr Umar Nabi, believed to have been behind the steering wheel during the Delhi blast, were circulated widely by news outlets. Investigative agencies have collected DNA samples from his family in Kashmir to confirm his identity.
Nabi, sporting a buzz-cut, trimmed beard, and transparent glasses, shocked the public, as a trained doctor was found to be involved in a violent act that killed at least 10 people.
According to India Today, Professor Dr Ghulam Jeelani Romshoo, a retired medical professor in Kashmir, said Nabi was terminated from Government Medical College, Anantnag, in 2023 after a patient died due to his negligence.
During his three-year residency programme, multiple complaints were filed against Nabi for rudeness, inattentiveness, and frequent absence. Dr Jeelani explained that on one critical occasion, Nabi left a patient unattended, and despite the efforts of a junior doctor, the patient died.
A four-member committee of senior doctors, including Dr Jeelani, investigated the case, confirming Nabi’s negligence and recommending his termination.
