AI-powered cameras read vehicle plate at exit and calculate fee, which is paid via an app
Sharjah: Sharjah City Municipality on Monday announced the opening of two smart public parking lots in Al Khan and Al Qasimiyah (Al Nad), offering a total of 392 parking spaces. Currently, there are more than 90,000 smart parking spaces in Sharjah.
In these spaces, cameras powered by artificial intelligence (AI) register the vehicle’s number plate upon entry. When exiting, the cameras read the plate again, and a system calculates the parking duration, sending a notification to the owner with the applicable fees. Payments can be made through the ‘Mawqef’ smart app.
Seasonal subscriptions are also available, covering daily, weekly, monthly, and yearly options. Users can subscribe via Mawqef, available on app stores, to complete the process by entering the vehicle’s license plate based on the subscription duration.
The initiative aligns with the municipality’s commitment to digital transformation and smart inspection methods for monitoring parking spaces and violations, said Khalid bin Falah Al Suwaidi, Director of Customer Service at Sharjah City Municipality.
He added that the municipality is expanding smart parking areas to accommodate the city’s growing population and tourism.
Hamid Al Qaidi, Director of Public Parking Department at Sharjah City Municipality, said that the smart parking areas supports the municipality’s efforts to save time and effort, offer digital services, and simplify the process for the public.
He pointed out that the two areas in Al Khan and Al Qasimiyah (Al Nad) offer various parking durations, from one hour to five hours, similar to the regular public paid parking system.
