A driving licence is one of the most important documents Dubai residents have, after the Emirates ID, of course.

While Dubai has a well-established network of metro trains, buses, taxis and trams, having a driving licence gives residents an unparalleled flexibility, allowing them to travel beyond fixed routes and the schedules of public transport, especially during off-peak hours.

Meanwhile, a driving licence also unlocks access to a wider range of employment opportunities.

Documents needed to renew a driving licence

Renewing a driving licence in Dubai is an extremely easy process, and the RTA has listed the requirements across categories.

For all nationalities, the requirement is a valid Emirates ID, an eye test, and a medical fitness test if the applicant’s profession is that of a driver.

Diplomats need a letter from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and an Emirates ID or a diplomatic card for embassies, consulates and international organisations instead of an Emirates ID.

Service fees

Customers younger than 21 years old need to pay Dh100 as driver licence renewal fees, along with knowledge and innovation fees of Dh20. They also need to pay an electronic eye test fee at eye test centres, ranging from Dh140 to Dh180.

In case they are requesting for a mobile truck service for the eye test and licence renewal, they must pay Dh500 extra.

Customers who are 21 years old and older must pay Dh300 for their driving licence renewal, along with Dh20 as knowledge and innovation fees. The electronic eye test fees remains the same – Dh140 to Dh180. Additionally, a charge of Dh500 applies if a mobile truck service is used.

What is the process?

The first step is to take an eye test at a centre affiliated to the RTA.

Then, the customer logs into the RTA website using UAE Pass, or his Emirates ID and driving licence number. Alternatively, the customer may also use the RTA app.

If using the website, the customer will receive an OTP on his mobile phone to confirm his identity.

Then, the customer selects the link names ‘Renewing a Driving Licence’ from the drivers’ licensing list. The customer then confirms his driving licence details before its issuance. Next, the delivery method is selected (electronic licence through the RTA App wallet, self service machines, or delivery service). Then, the customer settles all required fees and fines. Once these steps are completed, the customer receives a digital driving licence. He can then choose to receive a physical copy through either an RTA self-service machine or have it delivered to his residence/office by paying a fee.

If using the RTA app, the customer logs in using UAE Pass or his RTA credentials. If the account is linked with the Emirates ID, the results of the eye test will automatically show up. Next, the customer taps on the option to renew his licence, following which he must settle his fees and fines.
