Dubai: Gulf News readers feel education and money are equally important. They were debating the issue to mark International Literacy Day.

Every year, on September 8, the world celebrates the spread of education around the globe. It was observed for the first time in 1966.

Sameena Samad Khandker wrote to gulfnews.com from Karachi, Pakistan, to express her opinion. She said: "It is a blessing to be financially sound. To be educated at the same time - one gets to count their blessings twice! However, while money makes the world go round, education will take you around the world and keep opening doors to opportunities."

Sharjah resident Jabbar P.C.K. agrees.

He said: "Both of them are very important. Without education people may not earn as much as others. One gets a good status in public due to money and the same person respects the public due to [his or her] education."

Bindu Nair, an Indian expatriate, is also in favour of education.

She said: "An education gives us discipline in life, exposure to different cultures and a great confidence level. If you have an education, you can make money, based on your qualification. But, if one has money, it [does not necessarily mean] that he or she would behave decently in public."

Ashraf Alungal, an Indian expatriate currently studying in Sydney, Australia, believes that "knowledge is power".

He said: "Education and health is the infrastructure of any country. Once an individual gains knowledge, making money will be an easy path."

Faheem Omar, a Pakistani expatriate, said: "Education is essential as it paves the right path. Money cannot buy the basic principles of life."

Razul, who also wrote to gulfnews.com, is amongst the few people who thinks otherwise.

He wrote: "Money naturally leads. For one's career growth, education is a must, but without money it cannot be achieved!"

Ajman resident Malek Sultan Hayat, agrees. He said: "With money you can live your life with ease and people will respect you. Even if you are highly educated, you still you have to struggle to earn money."
