Health experts say this option is important for patients with limited alternatives

Abu Dhabi: Pfizer has announced the launch of a new treatment in the UAE for adults with serious Gram-negative bacterial infections, marking an important step forward in the country’s efforts to address antimicrobial resistance (AMR) one of the world’s most pressing health challenges.
AMR occurs when bacteria and other microbes stop responding to existing medicines, making common infections harder to treat. Globally, millions are affected each year, and resistant Gram-negative infections are among the most difficult to manage. When these infections do not respond to standard treatments, patients face longer hospital stays, fewer treatment options, and higher risks of complications.
The newly introduced therapy aims to restore effectiveness against some of the most resistant pathogens, filling a major gap in infectious disease care. Health experts say this option is especially important for patients with limited alternatives, helping to reduce the strain on families and the wider healthcare system.
Serhat Yalcinkaya, Pfizer’s Gulf Cluster Lead, said the launch reflects the company’s long-standing commitment to public health.
“At Pfizer, our focus has always been on patients. Today’s milestone underscores our commitment to delivering scientific breakthroughs that change patients’ lives,” he said. “For more than 175 years, Pfizer has been at the forefront of tackling infectious diseases, and our continued efforts to address antimicrobial resistance reflect both our responsibility and dedication to patients across the Gulf region.”
He added that Pfizer is working closely with healthcare providers and UAE authorities to ensure that patients receive timely access to life-saving treatments while also supporting long-term preparedness.
The introduction of the treatment comes as countries across the Gulf continue to invest in stronger infectious disease strategies. AMR has been identified by global health organisations as one of the biggest threats to modern medicine, with the potential to impact surgeries, cancer care, and routine treatments if not properly addressed.
Pfizer’s efforts in the region go beyond drug development. The company is also partnering with hospitals, clinicians, and public health programmes to improve early detection, encourage responsible use of antibiotics, and raise awareness about prevention.
The UAE has made significant progress in strengthening its healthcare system and improving readiness for emerging health risks. Introducing advanced treatment options for infectious diseases supports national goals to ensure high-quality care and protect community health.
As AMR continues to grow worldwide, health experts note that innovation, collaboration, and public awareness are key to reducing the threat.
With this latest milestone, Pfizer says it remains committed to working with the UAE to provide patients with more effective options today and for future generations.
