Abu Dhabi: The UAE's first privately-owned mammography mobile van was displayed during the three- day Abu Dhabi Medical Congress (ADMC) 2010 to help promote breast cancer awareness campaigns in the UAE and across the Middle East.

The Lifeline Hospital mobile mammography unit plans to travel to malls, parks, remote areas, as well in front of nearby primary health care centres. The van is also scheduled to travel to Oman, Yemen, Jordan, Syria, Palestine and India, with the aim of increasing early breast cancer detection.

Speaking about the initiative, Dr. Shamsheer V.P., Managing Director of Lifeline Group explained why he decided to encourage as many breast cancer campaigns as possible, to spread the word on early detection.

"It all started when I received a call from my Omani partner, who said that his wife (45 years) was diagnosed with breast cancer. A few months later she passed away. Another doctor working with us suddenly announced that his wife [60 years] and daughter [38 years] were both diagnosed with the condition. ... its about serving the community ..."
