The visit highlights the enduring charm of Dubai’s historic trading hubs
Dubai: In a gesture that combines heritage with modern leadership, Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai, Deputy Prime Minister, and Minister of Defence of the UAE, has opted for a traditional abra ride to visit one of Dubai’s old souks.
The move reflects Sheikh Hamdan’s deep appreciation for the city’s cultural roots and his commitment to staying connected with the local community.
The visit highlights the enduring charm of Dubai’s historic trading hubs and the timeless appeal of the abra, a traditional wooden boat that has ferried passengers across Dubai Creek for generations.
For many residents and visitors, an abra ride is one of the most authentic ways to experience old Dubai. Derived from the Arabic word ‘abara’, meaning ‘to cross’, the abra has long been a staple for getting between the Bur Dubai and Deira sides of the creek. It’s a short journey but rich in history and still costs just Dh1 for a one-way trip.
This isn’t the first time Sheikh Hamdan has chosen public transport. Back in 2020, he marked the 11th anniversary of the Dubai Metro by riding it himself and sharing snippets of the journey online.
And in 2023, His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, surprised commuters with a casual metro ride of his own.
