UAE to Oman for less than Dh100? Daily buses from Abu Dhabi and Sharjah make it possible

Dubai: If you are a UAE resident or tourist looking for the most affordable way to travel to Oman, consider hopping on one of the daily international buses from Abu Dhabi or Sharjah to Muscat. These services are operated by Mwasalat, Oman’s national public transport company, offering a convenient and budget-friendly option for cross-border travel.

Abu Dhabi to Muscat

In October 2023, the UAE-to-Oman bus service was resumed. The Route 202 bus travels between Muscat and Abu Dhabi via Al Ain, making several stops along the way. Buses also depart from Abu Dhabi Central Bus Station for the return journey to Muscat.

Bus pick-up points

  • Abu Dhabi Central Bus Station – Located on Rashid Bin Saeed Al Maktoum Street in Al Wahdah, Zone 1.

  • Al Ain Central Bus Station – Located on Al Wifadah Street in the Central District.

Cost

The cost of a one-way ticket is OMR 11.5 (Dh109.70), while a round trip costs OMR 22 (Dh209.82). According to Mwasalat, the total journey time is approximately nine hours, including a 45-minute to one-hour break.

Bus timings:

  • Departure from Abu Dhabi: 11.45am

  • Arrival in Muscat: 9.50pm

  • Duration: Around 10 hours

Sharjah to Muscat

In February 2024, Mwasalat launched a new bus route connecting Sharjah to Muscat. Route 203 operates two buses daily in each direction, departing from Sharjah and from Muscat.

Cost:

  • OMR 10 (Dh95) for a one-way trip

  • OMR 19 (Dh180.50) for a round trip

Bus timings:

  • Departures from both Sharjah and Muscat: 6.30am and 4pm daily

  • Estimated journey time: Eight hours

Pick-up and drop-off points:

  • Departure: Al Jubail Bus Station, Sharjah

  • Additional pick-up: Kalba Fort, Sharjah

Drop-off stops in Muscat:

  • Al Mabelah Footbridge

  • Al Khoudh Bridge

  • Burj Sahwa Bus Station

  • Muscat International Airport

  • Azaiba Bus Station

Passengers are allowed 23kg of luggage and 7kg of hand carry. Extra luggage can be added up to 10kg for an additional 2 OMR (Dh19.08), or up to 25kg for 5 OMR (Dh47.71).

How to book

1. To book your ticket, visit www.mwasalat.om. Choose whether it’s a one-way or round trip, select the number of passengers (including adults, children aged 3–11, and infants under 3), and enter your pick-up and drop-off locations from the drop-down menu.

2. After selecting your date of travel and preferred route from Sharjah, Abu Dhabi, or Al Ain, confirm your station choices and click ‘Continue’.

3. You will see a summary of your fare on the right. Enter your email and phone number to proceed. A one-time password (OTP) will be sent to your email, which you will need to enter before filling in your personal details, including full name, passport details, nationality, gender, mobile number, country of birth, and date of birth.

4. Once completed, click on ‘Book Now’ and pay using a credit or debit card.

Travel documents

During the booking process, you will need to provide identification depending on your nationality. Citizens of Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries must upload a copy of their national ID. UAE residents from other nationalities must provide a copy of their Emirates ID and Oman visa.

UAE residents can apply for an Oman visa at the Khatmat Mleiha border or in advance through Oman’s official eVisa portal, evisa.rop.gov.om, where an electronic visa for GCC residents is available.
