Dubai: An Indian expat’s dream book was released in Dubai on Tuesday, two years after she died in a tragic boat accident.

Titled Jaded Dubai Dreams (right), the 120-page book by Jyothi Chachara Asarpota is a contemporary work of fiction set in Dubai during the years of the real estate boom, the 2008 economic downturn and subsequent recovery.

Excited

Jyothi’s brother Bharath Chachara told XPRESS the book was in the final stages of editing when his sister died on September 30, 2016. “She was so excited about the book at the time and was looking forward to its release. But fate had other plans.”

He said Jyothi had gone river rafting with a group of friends in Bali when she toppled from the raft which got stuck in a submerged tree branch. “From what we understand, she lost consciousness and fell with her mouth open, face down. She was a champion swimmer but could not save herself as she passed out. She was choked to death within seconds. This despite the river being just a few feet deep and the shore just a few metres away. There was a doctor too in the group, but no CPR could revive her,” said Chachara.

Ironically, the Dubai-based family received Jyothi’s body on her 51st birthday - October 5, 2016. “The holiday was a birthday treat. But who knew things would turn out this way? The incident left us in deep shock.”

As time went by, the family wanted to do something in Jyothi’s memory which is when they thought of the unfinished dream book. So they came together, got it edited and secured the approval for its publication and release.

“Jaded Dubai Dreams is a gripping story of Sameera Desai who is originally a Mumbai girl. Her journey takes her to Dubai and its dynamic real-estate market. The story revolves round how Sameera grows professionally with the city, from an inexperienced real-estate consultant to a hardcore entrepreneur and even survives the 2008 Dubai recession. The novel explores myriad emotions and life challenges that strike a chord on all levels in a home that is away from home,” added Chachara.
