Abu Dhabi: At least 15 Yemeni soldiers and three children were killed in a missile attack launched by the Al Houthis on a school in Taiz, where pro-government forces are stationed, according to local residents and military sources.

Witnesses said the three children, who are two brothers and a relative, were in the area when the missile fell and hit the school in Al Kadha area, west of Taiz governorate.

Clashes have escalated recently in the disputed city of Taiz, southwest of Yemen, between fighters loyal to the internationally recognized government and the Houthis.

The clashes in Taiz and Marib in the north come as the United States and the United Nations intensify their efforts to cease fire between the Saudi-led coalition and the Al Houthis to revive peace talks stalled since late 2018.

The Saudi-led coalition intervened in Yemen in March 2015 against the Al Houthis, but the war that killed tens of thousands of people reached a stalemate for years, and Taiz remained effectively under siege.

The American envoy to Yemen said Friday that “a reasonable plan to reach a truce throughout Yemen was presented to the Al Houthi leadership days ago, but it seems that they are giving priority to their military attack on Marib, the last stronghold of the government.
