Cairo: Saudi authorities said customs officers had thwarted an attempt by an air traveller to smuggle suspected sorcery-related pieces into the kingdom.

The Zakat, Tax and Customs Authority said that a customs officer at the King Fahd International Airport in the eastern city of Dammam had suspected the passenger who was later found to have five leather pieces containing signs, numericals and names used in acts of witchcraft and sorcery.

The dubious objects were hidden among foodstuff in the suspect’s luggage.

The smuggler and the seized items were referred to competent agencies for completing disciplinary procedures, the authority said in a statement.

Neither the nationality nor age of the suspect was disclosed.

The authority stressed that preventing the smuggling of all items related to witchcraft, sorcery and quackery, which contradict Islam, is a priority at all entry points in the kingdom.
