Cairo: The marriage of a Saudi couple ended in divorce after the husband’s family taunted the wife and likened her to an animated character, according to a family consultant.
The husband’s family used to mock the woman because she was thin and tauntingly named her after the animated character, the consultant Abeer Al Saad said.
“They used this description too much in front of my husband who emulated them, sparking disagreements between us,” Al Saad told Saudi newspaper Sabq quoting the distressed woman.
The divisive cartoon character was not specified.
“In some cases, some families cause a rift between the husband and his wife by exaggerating her flaws or likening her to an ugly person,” the specialist warned.
There has been an increase in divorce rates in Saudi Arabia in recent years. Three out of every 10 marriages end in divorce in the kingdom, according to official statistics.
