Abu Dhabi: Saudi authorities in Jeddah have arrested a Saudi citizen and a Sudanese expat for allegedly defrauding people of their money using fake banknotes, police said.

“The duo’s line of business was to sell phony bills in return for less cash than their face value,” said the spokesperson of Mecca police.

The police seized 98 counterfeit banknote bundles, police said.

Prison term

The suspects, in their 50s and 70s, were remanded in custody and all preliminary legal measures were taken to move them to the Public Prosecution for further questioning and trial, police said.

If convicted the suspects could face a prison term of anywhere between one and 10 years and a maximum penalty of SR1 million.
