Cairo: Saudi Arabia has emphasised the availability of several options for Muslims arriving by air in the port city of Jeddah to reach the Grand Mosque, Islam’s holiest in Mecca, to perform the Umrah or minor pilgrimage.

The Saudi Ministry of Hajj and Umrah said the options for reaching the Grand Mosque from King Abdulaziz International Airport in Jeddah have become more diverse, ensuring a smooth and comfortable journey for the pilgrims.

They include the high-speed Haramain rail service, and car rentals that provide freedom of movement and flexible transportation. Other options include smart transportation apps and licensed taxis.

Shuttle buses are also available with an integrated system to serve visitors.

Millions of Muslims from all over the world flock to the Grand Mosque, home to the Holy Kaaba that the faithful direct in their prayers.

Saudi authorities are ramping up preparations for coping with an expected influx of pilgrims during the upcoming holy month of Ramadan when the Umrah season usually peaks. The month is expected this year to begin on March 1.

The current season of Umrah, which can be undertaken around the year, began in late June after the end of the annual Hajj pilgrimage.

The main rituals of the Umrah are encircling the Holy Kaaba for seven times, a rite known as Tawaf, and likewise walking back and forth between the hills of Safa and Marwah, a rite called Sa’i in the Grand Mosque.
