Abu Dhabi: Mecca police have arrested a Syrian man in his 30s for allegedly smashing car windows and stealing valuables, police said.

A spokesperson for the Mecca police said the man was remanded in police custody.

The suspect, who allegedly committed a raft of car smash-and-grabs, was referred to the Public Prosecution for further questioning and trial, the spokesperson said.

Police have alerted motorists to make sure their valuables are out of sight, “so before you get out of your car, never leave these things lying out on your seats, dashboard or floor as smash-and-grab thieves typically aren’t criminal masterminds, who craft clever schemes to swipe your stuff,” police said.

Other measures to prevent car smash-and-grabs include keeping your car highly visible, parking near other people and in a well-lit area or near a lamppost, as most such thieves go solo and the last thing they want is a crowd of onlookers.
