Dubai: Riyadh police have arrested a Saudi citizen for insulting the wife of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), Aisha, in a social media video, local media reported.

Maj. Khaled Al Kraidis, spokesman of Riyadh police, said, “Someone posted a video clip on social media insulting the Mother of the Believers, Aisha, saying offensive things against the Prophet.”

Riyadh police launched an immediate investigation into the incident and security forces arrested the man, who is in his 30s, Al Kraidis said.

“The arrested citizen was referred to the Public Prosecution for legal actions,” the spokesman of Riyadh police added.

An official source at the Public Prosecution said that anyone who publishes anything that would prejudice religious symbols, Islamic values and public morals will be considered a major criminal and punished with a fine of SR3 million or imprisonment for five years.
