Abu Dhabi: A Saudi citizen was arrested for allegedly buying phones and jewellery with fake money, police said.

Lieutenant Colonel Mohammed Al Shehri, spokesperson of the Eastern Region Police, said a Saudi man, in his 50s, was arrested in Saudi Arabia’s Eatern Province of Al Khobar on fraud and forgery charges.

“The man’s line of business was buying phones and gold jewellery with counterfeit banknotes and using a vehicle bearing fake number plates,” Colonel Al Shehri said.

The man was remanded in custody and all preliminary legal measures were taken to move him to the Public Prosecution for further questioning and trial, police said.

If convicted the suspect could face a prison term of anywhere between one and 10 years and a maximum penalty of SR1 million.
