Saudi Arabia: Bedouin culture inspires key camel event

Cairo: A famous Saudi camel festival has been inspired by the Bedouin culture in phrasing the emblem of its next edition, in a message of pride in the Arabian region’s Bedouin legacy after a Lebanese official used the term derogatorily sparking a massive outcry.

The Saudi Camel Club, which organizes the King Abdulaziz Camel Festival, said that the club has chosen the phrase “We are Bedouins” as an emblem for the sixth edition of the famous festival.

The club’s head Fahd Bin Hithleen confirmed that the phrase has been endorsed for the sixth edition of the festival, a major cultural event in Saudi Arabia.

Camels are a popular animal closely linked to heritage in Saudi Arabia. The animal has long been dubbed as the “ship of the desert”, being the lifeline for desert dwellers.

Lebanese caretaker foreign minister Charbel Wehbe submitted his resignation Wednesday after triggering wide anger and condemnations by calling a Saudi commentator a “Bedouin” during a television interview shown earlier this week.

Wehbe also hinted during the interview that the Gulf countries had brough Daesh terrorists into the region, an allegation that drew massive denunciations and official protests
