Cairo: Prominent Saudi preacher Ayed Al Qarni has been transferred to a hospital in Riyadh after being infected with the coronavirus, according to media reports.

Al Qarni contracted the virus days ago, the Saudi online newspaper Sabq reported. He was admitted to an intensive care unit of a governmental hospital on Wednesday after his health deteriorated, Ajel news portal said, citing unidentified sources.

The news prompted fans of the famous cleric to take to the internet to express their wishes of speedy recovery for him.

Born in January 1959, Al Qarni graduated from the Imam Mohammed bin Saud Islamic University in Saudi Arabia. He is known for his sermons and lectures and as an author of several books and a poet.
