Manama: An expatriate in Saudi Arabia has scammed people out of thousands of riyals by posing as a woman and flirting on social media.

A security source told the Saudi daily Al Watan that the Commission for the Promotion of Virtue and the Prevention of Vice received an anonymous tip which led to the man’s arrest.

The source said the man, aged  in his 20s, was exceptionally good at imitating women’s voices.

“He had successfully swindled victims for several years and acquired over SR15,000,” the source said.

When the police raided his flat, they found SR8,000 along with women’s clothes, makeup and perfume.

The conman was charged with deception and fraud. He was sentenced to one year in jail and 800 lashes after being found guilty by a court in Jeddah.
