Cairo: As Hajj approaches, Saudi Arabia is preparing for the influx of pilgrims travelling to Mecca, the holiest city in Islam.

One of the main entry points for international travellers is King Abdulaziz International Airport in Jeddah, located around 77km from Mecca.

Pilgrims are offered multiple transportation options to ensure a safe and convenient journey to the sacred city.

Options from Jeddah to Mecca

The Saudi Ministry of Hajj has highlighted several transportation choices to facilitate travel from Jeddah airport to Mecca during the busy Hajj season:

  • Haramain high-speed trains: Fast and efficient, the Haramain train service operates from a station conveniently located at the airport, offering a swift connection to Mecca.

  • Vehicle rentals: Pilgrims can also opt for vehicle rentals for a more flexible travel experience.

  • Transportation Apps: Approved ride-hailing apps provide another convenient option for pilgrims looking for a personalized journey.

  • Shuttle buses and licensed taxis: Numerous shuttle buses and licensed taxis will be available to take pilgrims directly to Mecca, ensuring they reach their destination with ease.

Increased capacity for Hajj 2025

To meet the high demand, the Saudi Transport General Authority (TGA) has unveiled a robust plan to support pilgrims during the Hajj season. This includes:

  • More than 25,000 buses and 9,000 taxis dedicated to transporting pilgrims.

  • Deployment of 180 inspection supervisors across 20 sites at the entrances to Mecca, Medina, and other sacred sites to ensure transportation companies comply with safety and quality standards.

With hundreds of thousands of Muslims expected to converge on Saudi Arabia for Hajj 2025, the country’s transportation infrastructure has been bolstered to ensure a smooth and secure pilgrimage.

The variety of available travel options ensures that pilgrims can choose the best method for their journey, from high-speed trains to convenient shuttle buses.
