Riyadh: Five members of one family have gone missing after their car was hit by torrential rains in a Saudi region, civil defence sources said on Wednesday.

The region of Jizan, in south-western Saudi Arabia, was inundated for hours on Tuesday after heavy rainfall pounded parts of the region sparking a power outage and submerging roads under water.

The missing family — a father, mother and three children – were riding their car on Tuesday when the vehicle was swept away by the rains in a valley.

“The family is still missing. Civil defence teams are making great efforts in order to find them,” a local civil defence source told Saudi news portal Ajel.

Authorities in Jizan have advised people to exercise caution and vigilance due to the bad weather. Rescue teams, security patrols and electricity technicians have been deployed to address the damage resulting from the rains that were accompanied by fierce winds and thunderous storms, according to the paper.

Rain waters have flooded streets in Jizan’s governorate of Abu Arish and trapped several families inside their homes. Municipal authorities sent tank trucks to pump rainwater from streets.
