Cairo: Saudi police said that they have detected violations of precautions against the spread of the coronavirus including physical distancing amid labour gatherings in the port city of Jeddah.

The violations were detected during field tours of marketplaces in the western city where workers were found packing roads and inside vehicles.

Other violations included failure to wear protective face masks. Police said violators were booked, but did not give a specific figure.

In recent weeks, Saudi Arabia has relaxed several virus-related restrictions, allowing the reopening of different economic activities.

However, authorities have repeatedly urged compliance with health rules and banned large gatherings in an effort to stem the spread of COVID-19.

Saudi Arabia so far has recorded a total of 330,798 virus cases and 4,542 deaths from the disease amid a steady drop in daily infection rates.
