Cairo: Residents of a house in Saudi Arabia’s western city of Taif survived death after a truck loaded with cement had ploughed into the site, a local newspaper reported Friday.

The residents were not present in the courtyard of the house when the truck crashed into the house early Thursday, the online newspaper Sabq said.

The crash resulted in partial collapse of the house wall, but did not cause casualties.

“At 6am, I woke up to the crash sound,” the house owner Mohammed Al Thebati said. “I went to see what had happened, only to be surprised that part of the house had collapsed due to the collision. Thank Allah, there was nobody in the courtyard at the time of the crash,” he added.

Al Thebati said after making sure everyone was safe, he forgave the truck driver. The exact cause of the crash was not given.

In April, Saudi Interior Minister Abdulaziz bin Saud said that the number of serious road crashes in the country had dropped by 34 per cent, while traffic fatalities have declined by 51 per cent to 13.5 deaths per 100,000 people from 28 deaths.

He added that high professionalism has contributed to efficient traffic control and optimal utilisation of road technology.
