Qatar Charity has completed the construction of 12 mosques and launched 64 income generating projects in Indonesia, local media reported.
Five mosques were inaugurated in five districts of Central Java province in the presence of Hidayat Nur Wahid, former speaker of Indonesia People's Consultative Assembly, local governors and members of regional parliament, Qatar News Agency (QNA) reported.
The foundation also inaugurated the second phase of income generating projects in Aceh province. The livelihood programme, part of the Charity’s development project in Indonesia, allocates a revolving fund to be used for starting new business.
The first phase of income-generating projects was started in April 2008 and helped in financing some 300 small projects for the benefit of needy families and victims of the Tsunami that devastated the region in December 2004.
The Charity in 2009 implemented 171 projects, worth QR17.08 million ($4.7 million), related to water resources, education, housing and schools.
Qatar Charity has since establishing an office in Jakarta in 2005, built 367 mosques, five multi-purpose centres, 200 housing units, and a hospital.
Last February, it offered urgent relief to around 9,500 victims of the floods in Jakarta. That campaign included food and medical aid and emergency relief materials, in addition to psychological support.
The non-government organisation was set up in 1992 to support the Qatari society and communities in need in various parts of the world.
This month, it distributed non-food parcels to 14,000 African refugees from Somalia and Ethiopia in Yemen as part of a memorandum of understanding signed last February with the UN office of High Commissioner for Refugees to address gaps in humanitarian assistance resulting from the increasing number of refugees in Yemen, fleeing armed conflicts, drought, desertification and unemployment.
