Students find mobile phones inspiration for their artwork in Abu Dhabi

Last updated:

Despite its title, the artists behind the Exodus exhibition are hoping visitors will flock to see their work on display at Delma Corner, at the Abu Dhabi Cultural Foundation.

The show, which runs from now until Wednesday, is the first exhibition by Zoe Ogilvie and Caitlin Rieckhoff, senior students at the American Community School of Abu Dhabi.

A 'bigger deal'

Ogilvie's works have been inspired by mobile phones which she finds are curiously a "bigger deal" in Abu Dhabi than in her native Australia.

She says, "The inspirations for my artwork are derived from the society that I am immersed in."

Her highly imaginative paintings share a common mobile phone theme as, according to Ogilvie, mobiles are "an accessory to the status quo of our society."

Inspired by music

In contrast, Rieckhoff chose to investigate the "life flowers and their interactions with humans" through her work.

Inspired by music and not afraid to use colour, her paintings Arachnophobia and PM to AM stand out.

The first, she says, displays her own closely-held fear of insects while the second brings out beautifully the concept of light and day and the cycle of going to sleep and waking up.

Rieckhoff plans to study art and design at college and intends to pursue an art-related career thereafter.
