Muscat: Three Omanis were killed and others injured in a car accident in Jabal Akhdar on Friday evening, the Royal Oman Police (ROP) has confirmed.

The deceased — a mother, her daughter, and the wife — died at the scene, according to the ROP.

An ROP official told Gulf News that a car crashed into a mountainside and caught fire while descending from Jabal Akhdar, resulting in the deaths and multiple injuries.

The driver reportedly lost control of the vehicle while attempting to navigate a steep turn. The ROP stated that the brakes failed to respond in time, causing the car to crash into the mountain.

"The driver did not realise he was approaching a sharp, steep turn, which caused him to lose control," the officer said.

The ROP has urged motorists heading to Jabal Akhdar and other mountainous regions to ensure thorough maintenance checks on their vehicles before travelling, to help prevent such accidents.

Part of the Hajar mountain range, Jabal Al Akhdar (the Green Mountain) is about a two-hour drive from the capital Muscat. Rising to a height of 2,980 metres, it is renowned for its wide plateau near the summit. Its moderate summer climate, chilly winters, and range of hotel facilities make it one of the country’s most popular tourist destinations.
