Oman and the United States share a long and stable friendship that dates back to over 200 years. The two countries continue to share a thriving relationship with permanent diplomatic missions in their respective capitals with official delegations regularly visiting both countries.
The ties were further strengthened with a bilateral Free Trade Agreement, signed in 2006 and put into effect in 2009, promoting trade and investment in both countries. In 2016, the United States and Oman signed the US-Oman Science and Technology Cooperation Agreement further expanding bilateral cooperation.
Collaborate closely
US Embassy in Oman notes in its website that the two countries formalised their relationship when they signed the “Treaty of Amity and Commerce” in 1833 — the first bilateral accord between the US and an Arab Gulf state. Oman and the United States continue to collaborate closely on regional security and stability, as well as economic prosperity and trade.
Oman and the United States expanded their trade and diplomatic relations in 1958, when they signed the “Treaty of Amity, Economic Relations, and Consular Rights” in Salalah.
In 1972, the United States opened its Embassy in the capital of Muscat and the Sultanate opened its embassy in Washington D.C. the following year. Recent visits by the Secretary of State and other US government leaders highlight the long and fruitful friendship between the two nations.
