Muscat: Seven people were killed in traffic accidents in Oman, the royal Oman Police (ROP) said on Tuesday.

"A motorist went berserk in south Mawalah area in Muscat and caused the death of three people, including himself, " a spokesperson for the ROP's Public Relations Department said.

The speeding vehicle jumped over the road divider after the driver lost control of the car.

"The vehicle then hit cars coming from the other direction," he said, adding that the driver of the first car hit by the vehicle also died along with the driver and passenger in the vehicle that jumped over the caused the accident.

Two other vehicles on the other side of the divider were also badly damaged and occupants received moderate to serious injuries. "The injured were taken to the Sultan Qaboos University Hospital," the police spokesperson said.

The impact of the accident was so severe that the car that jumped over the divider was split into two and an oncoming car caught fire after it was hit by the vehicle debris.

In another accident late on Monday, three people were killed in the interior region in a head-on collision. The injured were taken to the nearby Nizwa Hospital.

Meanwhile, an Indian, who dashed across the road instead of taking a nearby foot-over bridge to cross the highway, was run over by a vehicle.

The ROP has urged people not to speed and adhere to traffic regulations and asked pedestrians to use foot-over bridges or designated zebra crossing areas to avoid being hit by speeding cars.
