Muscat: Stiff penalties are on the cards for violators of food safety regulations in Oman as authorities are updating the country's food safety law, according to Shaikh Abdullah Bin Salim Al Rowas, Minister of Regional Municipalities and Water Resources (MRMWR).
Speaking at the first Oman Food Safety Conference that ended Monday at the Al Bustan Palace Hotel, the minister revealed that the Food and Safety division of MRMWR was currently working on rules and regulations to deal strictly with establishments that violate good practices.
The minister stressed on safety of food items and said the issue of safety of food should be addressed in a scientific manner. He also assured that steps were being taken to develop awareness of food safety and action against those who fail to follow municipal norms laid down by authorities.
Penalty
Meanwhile, Haitham Bin Khalfan Al Aakhazami, Director of Food Monitoring at the MRMWR, said that any individual or organisation caught violating the food safety laws would be levied a 2,000 Omani riyal (Dh19,007) fine under the new revised regulations that could be implemented soon.
