Dubai: Seven expats have been arrested by the Royal Oman Police (ROP), on charges of online fraud.

A statement issued online by ROP said: “Muscat Governorate Police Command, in cooperation with the General Department of Investigations and Criminal Investigations, arrested seven expatriates on charges of electronic fraud.”

“The criminal method used was to send text messages via mobile phone to a group of people that includes a fake request by a bank to call the phone number attached to the message to activate their bank cards and during the call, bank data was taken from the victims and the fraudsters would withdraw money from their accounts.”

“The Royal Oman Police called on people not to be misled by anonymous messages, communications or links and not to provide anyone with any personal data, such as credit card number, password and bank account number,” the statement added.

In a separate incident, four expats have been also arrested by Royal Oman Police (ROP), on charge of murder of an expat of the same nationality in North Al Batinah Governorate.

A statement issued by the police said: “North Al Batinah Governorate Police Command arrests four expatriates for committing the murder of an expatriate of the same nationality. The case is under process.”
