Muscat: Coast Guard patrol boats intercepted three vessels off the coast of Musandam in central Oman on Wednesday and apprehended nine infiltrators trying to enter Oman illegally with a huge quantity of alcohol.

“The three confiscated boats were trying to enter Oman with nine illegal persons when the coast guards intercepted them off Lima Island,” a spokesman for the Royal Oman Police (ROP) said.

Meanwhile, the police arrested 88 Asian expatriates from Rustaq town, about 160km north-west of Muscat, on charges of violating Oman’s residency laws.

The authorities in Oman are continuing a crackdown against illegal residents and so far this year, the Ministry of Manpower has arrested, with the help of ROP, 7,026 violators of labour laws from different parts of the country.

“Nearly 54 per cent of labour law violators are caught in Muscat,” Saeed Bin Salim Bin Saeed Al Badi, Director-General of Labour Welfare at the Ministry of Manpower, said in a statement released on Tuesday.

He warned that the ministry, along with the security agencies in the country, will continue apprehending illegal residents and urged business houses not to employ illegal residents.
