Met office warns temperatures are expected to rise further in several governorates
Muscat: Oman is currently experiencing intense heatwaves, with temperatures nearing record highs across the Sultanate.
On Sunday, the mercury soared to a scorching 48.6°C in Qurayat province, coming close to the critical 50°C mark. Al Ashkarah recorded 47.2°C, followed by Sur at 46.4°C, and Awabi at 45.6°C.
The Oman Meteorology Department has warned that temperatures are expected to rise further, particularly in the governorates of North Batinah, South Batinah, Dhahirah, North Sharqiyah, and Al Wusta.
Medical professionals have advised residents to stay indoors during peak heat hours and avoid direct sun exposure.
Staying hydrated and maintaining electrolyte levels is essential to prevent heat-related illnesses.
Meanwhile, authorities have banned outdoor work at construction sites and in open areas between 12:30 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. from June to August due to extreme heat. Companies that violate the midday work ban will face penalties.
In its Sunday forecast, the Met Office predicted mainly clear skies across most governorates, with a chance of low clouds and fog patches developing late at night and early morning over parts of Dhofar, South Sharqiyah, and Al Wusta.
