Muscat: Indian community in Oman celebrated India’s 72nd Republic Day by participating in the live streaming of the flag hoisting ceremony held at the Indian embassy premises in the capital. Sultan Haitham Bin Tariq sent a message of congratulations to the President of India on this occasion.

The simple ceremony at the chancery premises saw India’s ambassador to Oman Munu Manawar hoisting the flag and convey greetings to all members of the Indian community in Oman. The Ambassador also conveyed warm wishes to Oman’s government and highlighted the bilateral cooperation in the wake of COVID-19. He also read the excerpts from the address of the President of India.

Videos of patriotic songs from Indian school students and Indian nationals added to the fervour of the event. In his speech Ambassador Munawar lauded the efforts of the Omani government in taking good care of Indian nationals during the pandemic time and added that India can be a strong and resilient partner in many priority areas for Oman’s Vision 2040 programme.

Oman has an active Indian diaspora. Notable Indians nurtured in Oman include ace tennis player Mahesh Bhupathy who did his schooling in Oman, Hindi film actress Sara Jane Dias who moved to Mumbai after completing her high school in one of the Indian Schools in Oman, well-known modern-age director of Hindi movies, Ruchi Narayan, and Manjari Babu, noted playback singer to name a few.
