Muscat: The husband of a 25-year-old Indian nurse who was murdered in Oman on April 21 has been released from detention, Gulf News has learnt.

The husband, L.T., had remained under detention in Oman for almost four months as a suspect in the murder.

An official at Royal Oman Police told Gulf News that the husband was released as no evidence surfaced implicating him in the murder of his wife.

The investigation is still under way to know the identity of the killer, said the official. The official did not give further details.

The nurse was identified as Chikku Robert from the south Indian state of Kerala and was found murdered at her residence in Salalah province in the south of the country on April 21.

Gulf News reported earlier that Oman police had not unearthed any evidence of L.T.’s involvement and had been unable to extract a confession.

The source told Gulf News that Robert was suspected of having an affair but did not divulge more details on her alleged lover’s identity or whether he was a suspect in the murder.

In May, Omani media outlets cited the victim’s father as saying that L.T. was innocent and that he considered him “like his son”.

The nurse’s body was laid to rest in Kerala on May 2.

According to media reports from Oman, Robert was found stabbed to death at her residence. She was five months pregnant.

A native of Angamaly in Kerala, she married Thomas from Changanassery seven months earlier. Both were reportedly working at Badr Al Samaa hospital in Salalah province. Her husband found her around 7pm stabbed to death in their flat, and reported the matter to the police.

Murder is rare in Oman. In 2015, only six murders were reported.
