Muscat: An expatriate worker was rushed to hospital after inhaling chlorine gas that leaked at a desalination plant in Samayil province, 70km from Oman’s capital, officials say.

The worker was quickly transferred to Samayil Hospital and is reported to be in stable condition.

An official at the Public Authority for Civil Defence and Ambulance told Gulf News that emergency teams brought the situation under control within two hours.

“A total evacuation of staff had occurred and a team of hazardous materials arrived at the scene and contained the situation,” the official said.

An investigation was under way to determine what caused the gas leak, the official added.

In September 2016, a gas leak at ice factory in Seeb province of Muscat governorate was contained by Civil Defence staff.

No causalities were reported.

In 2015, thirteen workers suffered injuries after inhaling ammonia gas that leaked from a factory in the Russayl Industrial district in Muscat.

The workers suffered light to medium injuries due to gas inhalation.
