Cairo: Oman Friday confirmed 1,619 new cases of the novel coronavirus, an increase of 592 cases against the tally reported the day before.

The latest cases take to 64,193 the country's total infections, the Omani news agency ONA reported, citing the Health Ministry.

The newly diagnosed cases include 1,249 Omanis and 370 foreign residents, the ministry said without providing a breakdown of the non-Omani patients.

The ministry also announced eight more deaths from COVID-19, bringing Oman's total such fatalities to 298.

The country's overall recoveries from the disease have reached 41,450, according to the ministry.

In recent weeks, Oman has experienced an uptick of the virus infections, prompting authorities to tighten preventive measures.

On Tuesday, a supreme committee in charge of tackling COVID-19 announced keeping the governorate of Dhofar and the state of Masirah closed until further notice as part of precautions against the spread of the highly infectious ailment.
