Cairo: Oman Wednesday announced halting all public transport, the latest move to contain the spread of the coronavirus in the country.

The restriction includes buses, microbuses and ferry boats except for buses and boats plying to and from the governorate of Musandam and the Masirah Island, Oman's news agency reported. The ban will take effect beginning Thursday until further notice, it added.

"This comes out of keenness on safety of public transport users and workers against the spread of the new coronavirus," the Transport Ministry said. Oman has recorded a total of 33 virus cases, 12 of them have recovered. The Sultanate has taken a string of precautions against the spread of the virus. They include stopping issuing tourist visas and all sporting events as well as banning the entry of tourist vessels to the sultanate's ports.
