Muscat: October turned out to be another deadly month for Oman with 67 people being killed in traffic accidents.

“Al Sharqiyah region (east) saw the most (17) number of fatalities," said a spokesperson for the Royal Oman Police.

He added that 651 accidents were recorded during October and 844 people were injured.

In the first week of this month, 20 people were killed in 140 accidents. Half of the dead in the week that ended on November 5, were from Batinah region, which connects Muscat with the UAE in the north.

The most gruesome accident was in front of Naseem Park on the outskirts of Muscat in which five vehicles were involved and five people were killed.

“The vehicle which caused the accident was over-speeding when one of its tyres burst and crossed into the other side of the road and collided with four vehicles coming in the opposite direction," said the police spokesperson.

The police have urged motorists to be extra vigilant on the roads during the five-day Eid Al Adha holidays.

“About 30 people had died during the last Eid Al Fitr holidays as people threw caution to the wind in their celebratory mood," he said.
