Manama: A sheep, known for its particularly good breeding ability, has sold for a record KD25,000 (Dh323,241) in Kuwait.

The sheep is named Mayzoon and breeders are willing to pay up to KD200 for use of it for just one evening, Kuwaiti daily Al Rai reported on Tuesday.

The tup, the farming term for an uncastrated sheep, will prove a bargain in the long term, according to local experts.

The new owner who purchased Mazyoon at a public auction preferred to remain anonymous, but was a member of the ruling family, the daily said.

"It is the biggest bargain in Kuwait's sheep market history," Malfi Al Dihani, who organised the bidding, said. "A new deal is being worked out for another sheep, but this time only for KD8,000.

Al Dihani said that sheep trading is doing well in Kuwait recently and that one breeder made KD170,000 in one year.
