Manama: A mosque, which opened in Zurich last week, will promote communication between the Muslim community and the people of Switzerland, according to the mosque imam.

Sulaiman Abdul Qader said the Kuwait-funded mosque would foster moderation and promote social awareness programmes, which address violence, drug addiction and high divorce rates, amongst other issues.

Kuwait's awqaf and Islamic affairs undersecretary highlighted the theme of moderation and said in a speech at the inauguration event on Saturday.

"Supporting the construction of the mosque aims to turn Kuwait into an international moderation centre," Dr. Adel Al Falah said.

"The Islamic nation should be steered back to moderation as justice and goodness are Islam's social pillars. Muslims in the West must break free of identity-related fears, positively integrate into their societies and present a bright image of moderate Islam," he was quoted by the Kuwait News Agency (Kuna) as saying.

Kuwaiti scholar Mohammad Al Awadhi called for promoting dialogue with moderate European groups.
