Kuwait City: Since Kuwait began its COVID-19 vaccination campaign on December 24, more than 20,000 people have been vaccinated, the country’s Minister of Health, Dr. Basel Al Sabah said.
Dr. Basel spoke at a press conference on Thursday, after he took the second dose of the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine. He pointed out that anybody that took the second dose will receive an electronic vaccination certificate, an “immunity passport” as the Dr. Basel explained that can be used as proof of vaccination around the world.
Out of the 20,000 people that got vaccinated, the priority was given to frontline workers, health workers, those above the age of 65 and people with chronic illnesses.
First batch
So far, all of the vaccines that have been administered are the Pfizer vaccine. Kuwait received the second batch of the Pfizer vaccine last week, after receiving the first batch on December 23.
While the priority has been given to certain segments of society, Dr.Basel and other health professionals are encouraging citizens and residents to pre-register on the Ministry’s website. As of Thursday, around 250,000 people have registered for the vaccine.
Given that 20,000 people out of Kuwait’s four million population have received the vaccine, around 0.5 per cent of the population is vaccinated.
