Kuwait City: The Emir of Kuwait, Sheikh Nawaf Al Ahmed Al Sabah, addressed the nation during a televised speech on Wednesday evening.

Sheikh Nawaf stressed the importance of “national unity” and the necessity to protect the country’s stability by refraining from spreading false information and malicious calls. He called on all to stay away from spreading rumors on social media as a means to protect “the dear homeland, the oasis of safety and security”.

It is customary for the Emir to give a speech during the Holy month as the tradition began with the late Emir Sheikh Jaber Al Ahmed Al Sabah and it carried on during Sheikh Nawaf’s predecessor the late Emir, Sheikh Sabah Al Ahmed Al Sabah.

The Emir stated that cooperation between the different branches of government is essential for the development of the country. He called for avoiding any tension and division, urging a calm and peaceful dialogue.

Rising tensions

His statement comes as there are rising tensions between the legislative and executive branch, leading to a political deadlock.

He thanks the frontline workers for their tireless effort in combating the COVID-19 virus. “We have been facing exceptional conditions for more than a year that required vigilance and caution due to the virus which has affected the whole world,” he went on to say, “everybody should abide by the health measures.”

Following the tradition of his predecessors, Sheikh Nawaf remembered the late Sheikh Sabah and prayed to Allah to bestow mercy on his soul. He also prayed for the well-being of all Kuwaitis, Arabs and Muslims.
