Cairo: Kuwait has confirmed 83 further cases of the novel coronavirus, raising the total infections in the country to 993 including one death, a health official said Friday.

The latest cases include two linked to travel to the UK, and 77 others who were in contact with previously infected people, spokesman for the Health Ministry Dr Abdullah Al Sanad said in a media briefing. The four other cases are being investigated, he added.

The overall number of patients including those in intensive care units is 26, 10 of them in critical condition, the Kuwaiti news agency KUNA reported.

Kuwaiti Health Minister Sheikh Basil Al Sabah earlier Friday said that 12 more patients have recovered from the disease, raising to 123 the total recoveries in the country. The recovered patients are 10 Kuwaitis and two foreign residents, he added.

Earlier this week, the Kuwaiti government tightened its measures against the spread of the coronavirus. The latest steps included complete lockdown of two populous areas, expansion of a night-time curfew in other areas and extending the closure of all state institutions.
