Cairo: Nine flights, carrying Kuwaitis from different countries, arrived home on Sunday, marking the start of a major airlift to bring home Kuwaitis stranded abroad due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The flights flew from Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Riyadh and Manama, Kuwaiti media reported.

The evacuation airlifting, the biggest in Kuwait's history, will continue until May 7 with the aim of repatriating around 50,000 citizens, according to officials.

In a televised address on the occasion, Kuwait's Emir Sheikh Sabah Al Ahmad Al Jaber said Sunday that cooperation and abidance by health instructions are key to contain the virus.

"On this occasion, I urge my brothers and sons who have returned to the homeland to strictly and fully abide by instructions of health authorities, especially the period of institutional and domestic quarantine and to avoid mixing to protect their health, the health of their families and safety of society at large," he added.

Kuwaiti Foreign Minister Sheikh Ahmad Nasser Al Sabah has said that repatriation flights will continue for citizens, who are still abroad and wishing to return home.
